Week 6 - Ransom Quote - Stefan Sagmeister
- Stefan Sagmeister
I like this quote. It’s short, sharp and it draws you in. I find this quote cynical. It too me draws attention to how everyone is kinda on their own high horse and thinks they know everything, knows what’s right and as such, when i think in reality, only God himself can say i am right because he knows what’s right and what’s wrong.
Originally the quote was ‘Everybody always thinks they are right’ However I short ended it by taking out the always as i felt it disrupted the quote a bit, as well as just not having enough room for it on my note.
This quote actually originates from an artwork, this artwork consists of six large inflatable white, angry monkeys that are hold a word of the phrase each. The artwork was designed to bring attention, towards design. Each monkey was placed in a different city, in a different position, in Scottish Cities (Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness, Dundee and Stirling) so the only ways to knows what they all said was to visit every city and see all the words OR via media. Which is exactly what happened. Very soon after they were erected, newspapers were writing articles about it, showing spreads of the quote. People had their photos taken with these 10 meter statues and kids began climbing on them.
“Over the years I had become rather obsessed with white angry monkeys. I had first proposed one resembling a Mozart-like porcelain bust as packaging design…, …then as a signage system for an exhibit of contemporary art…, …and only when I tried for the third time, in Scotland, did the monkeys finally see the light of day.”I decided to pair this quote with browns, paper and bookish imagery, I think that the browns really enhance how this quote feels, Especially in the cynical way i see it as. But I also added bookish imagery due to how books and media can warp peoples worldview. I found a book of puzzles that had a letter sheet which i think was perfect for what I wanted, as well as a bunch of newspaper, which is another thing that can shift biases and move peoples worldviews. This was all set amongst furniture settings ripped from an IKEA book and included natural ‘homely’ elements which I feel again add to how I wanted this poster to end up looking which also enhances the meaning of it.
I really like how this ransom quote came out and I think it looks very visually interesting and enhances the quotes meaning with the hidden messages and meanings added through the imagery I have chosen to depict in the poster.
