Week 4 - Reflection

Poster Reflection

Week 4

IM starting to combine elements of both constructivism and Postmodernism into one. Or at the very least that’s the direction I’m heading. I have a very angular sort of design, playing with parallel lines and how they can be formatted but also thinking about the colour palette.

At the moment I’m leaning towards darker colours and ones quite opposite to the ones that the Constructivists used to venture more into the postmodernism side id like to incorporate. This postmodernist inspiration also shows through the letters in the world REALM (which was the word i chose), as the letterforms are quite jagged. This mostly includes browns and dark greens. I’m starting with a very dark green-brown background and ashy green kind of lines to contrast. I’m no quite sure how i feel about the ashy green yet.

I’m experimenting with putting the word near the top,  although I have decided I would like to place the word and adjacent parallel lines in a diagonal format. I’m experimenting with the parallel lines, having about 6, evenly spacing them out with an equal sizing on each but making them slightly darker the further they sink into the bottom corner.

I decided in the end, to change the sizing of the lines, having them each line across into the corner where they drift off. I liked the gradient idea, so i kept that. For the other text information we were required to add in, I chose to use a Serif font, mainly because I have a massive thing against Sans serifs, but also because I though it would end up being a good fit for the design of my poster and would work nicely with the jaggedness of my REALM letterforms.

Spacing out the text was hard although i ended up putting a single line of information on a diagonal line each, placing it near the bottom of the poster. I think it needed up looking really nice, especially as i chose a stark white for contrast to the ashy greens and moody browns.

I was starting to see these influences really come through by this stage although i felt something was missing. the REALM text was brown and the background was very flat, so i wanted a standout colour for the REALM letterforms and i wanted to bring texture into what was feeling like a very flat, lifeless poster.

I played around with the textures provided in Indesign, and found a vertical lined one that i feel brought a lot of depth to the poster. The colour for the REALM letters was my next stop and so i played around with about six different colours, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Purple and green.

The Orange, blue and green ended up not looking as nice on the test prints as it did on the computer so when i tried with the yellow, purple and pink, they contrasted really well. I decided on the pink as it showed the most contrast and visible difference to the browns, greens and other earthy tones i had placed in my poster.

All in all, Postmodernism is ruling the most over my design and the way it has been coming out, although the Constructivist elements, I have shown admiration for, have come through in a subtle way.
